How to Freeze Fried Eggs

Lots of people freeze different types of eggs to save themselves some time in the kitchen. While fried eggs aren’t the best to freeze, you can get the job done if you follow the simple steps we outline below:

  1. Cool
Fry your eggs in a pan and once they’re done to your liking, slide them onto a plate. Cover the eggs with a paper towel and leave them sitting at room temperature for thirty minutes or so until they have cooled completely.
  2. Line a Container
Add a sheet of greaseproof paper to a plastic container. Makes sure the paper covers the entire base of the box before moving to the next step.
  3. Add the Eggs
Next, place your fried eggs on the greaseproof paper, ensuring they’re spaced out and not touching one another.
  4. Label and Freeze
Make a note of today’s date and the use-by date on the top of the box, and place your eggs in the freezer. Remember, you can freeze fried eggs for around two months.

3 Tips for Freezing Fried Eggs

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing fried eggs to have the best results:

Cook Them Fresh
While you can freeze fried eggs to save yourself a little bit of time, we’d always advise you to cook them fresh. Given it takes less than two minutes to prepare fried eggs, freezing them in advance doesn’t come with a whole lot of advantages!

You should only really freeze fried eggs if you’ve made a big batch and don’t want to throw them out!

Freeze Other Types of Eggs
You can freeze scrambled, boiled, and even poached eggs if you like. However, one thing to be mindful of is that eggs never taste quite as good as they do when they’re fresh if you have frozen them first.

However, if you need to prepare eggs in batches to serve a lot of people, freezing them ahead of time is a handy trick to have up your sleeve.

Reheat From Frozen
When you’re ready to eat your frozen eggs, we’d suggest adding them to the frying pan (or placing them in the oven) until they’re sufficiently hot. You don’t need to worry about thawing them in advance, but we explain how to go about it in one of the following sections.

How Long Can You Freeze Fried Eggs?

You can freeze fried eggs for around two months. This is really the maximum amount of time you should leave eggs in the freezer, as they will start to lose some of their taste and texture after this period.

If you’re keeping your fried eggs in the fridge, you can preserve them there for 1-2 days before you should think about eating them. All this being said, we’d recommend preparing fried eggs just before you plan to eat them for the best results.

How Do You Defrost Fried Eggs?

When you’re ready to reheat your fried eggs, simply remove them from the freezer and add them to the frying pan or oven.

You don’t need to defrost them in advance. However, if you want to thaw them for whatever reason, just remove the eggs from the freezer and allow them to thaw in the fridge.

You should never defrost fried eggs at room temperature or in the microwave.

Can You Refreeze Fried Eggs?

No, you should only freeze fried eggs once. This is primarily from a taste perspective, as you can ruin the consistency of eggs if you freeze them more than once.

Equally, you need to be careful with how eggs are stored, and leaving fried eggs sitting at room temperature for too long can cause harmful bacteria to form on their surface. As such, we would only recommend freezing fried eggs once.

Do Fried Eggs Freeze Well?

Generally, fried eggs freeze reasonably well. They won’t taste as great as fried eggs that are fresh out of the pan, but it’s a viable option if you’ve made a big batch of fried eggs and you don’t know what else to do with them.

Ultimately, make sure you use them within two months, or they will start to deteriorate in taste and texture.

If you’ve still got questions about freezing fried eggs or eggs in general, then these may help:

How Do You Store Fried Eggs?

You can either freeze fried eggs or you can store them in the fridge. They will keep in the fridge for 4 to 5 days in an airtight container or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Do Cooked Eggs Freeze Well?

They freeze better than you might expect but they will never be as good as they were when cooked fresh. You should freeze cooked eggs as a last resort.

What is the Best Way to Freeze Eggs?

We would recommend whisking raw eggs together before pouring them into a muffin tin. Freeze the tray until the eggs are solid then pop them out and store in a freezer bag.
