As the name would suggest, Welsh cakes are super popular in Wales and throughout the rest of the UK, for that matter! Their popularity comes from the fact that they’re so easy to prepare, and they’re extremely tasty with a mid-morning cuppa.

To those of you who haven’t heard of them, they’re a little bit like scones.

If you’re planning to prepare a batch of Welsh cakes for a special occasion, then you may be left wondering whether or not you can freeze Welsh cakes successfully?

The Quick Answer

Yes, you can freeze Welsh cakes. Welsh cakes can be frozen for around 3 months. Once baked, allow them to cook before wrapping each Welsh cake in a layer of cling film. You can then place the wrapped Welsh cakes into a Tupperware box before freezing.

How to Freeze Welsh Cakes

Some people add currants, sultanas or raisins to their Welsh cakes, but this doesn’t affect how they should be frozen. In fact, the freezing process is remarkably simple, as we will introduce below.

  1. Allow to Cool
Welsh cakes give off the most delightful smell when they’re baking! When they’re fully cooked, remove them from the tray and place them on a rack. They will take a while to cool, so the more air you allow to circulate between them, the better. With a generous slab of butter, the first Welsh cake out is pretty hard to resist!
  2. Wrap Individually
Wrap each of your Welsh cakes in cling film once they have cooled. This will offer them an additional level of protection against freezer burn and will ensure they stay fresher for longer.
  3. Place in a Tupperware Box
After you’ve wrapped each of your Welsh cakes individually, place a piece of greaseproof paper in a Tupperware box. Then line your cakes on the surface. Feel free to stack them on top of one another, as you don’t need to worry about them sticking together when they’re individually wrapped.
  4. Label and Freeze
Write the date you prepared the Welsh cakes on the lid of the Tupperware box, as well as the use-by date, and place the box in the freezer. Remember, you can freeze Welsh cakes for around three months after baking them.

3 Tips for Freezing Welsh Cakes

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing Welsh cakes to have the best results:

  • Freeze Quickly – Although your Welsh cakes will remain fresh and delicious in the fridge for around five days after you’ve baked them, for best results, freeze them as soon as they’ve cooled. This will ensure your cakes are super soft and delicious when it comes to defrosting and enjoying them later down the line.
  • Freeze Them Uncooked – If you don’t have time to wait for them to cook, you can freeze your uncooked Welsh cakes. Simply follow the same steps as above, but you obviously don’t need to wait for them to cool! However, if you plan to freeze uncooked Welsh cakes, you should only leave them in the freezer for around one month.
  • Defrost Before Cooking – Don’t be tempted to cook your uncooked Welsh cakes directly from frozen. Cooking from frozen can distort the texture, so to ensure it’s consistent, defrost them following the steps listed below before placing them in the oven.

How Do You Defrost Welsh Cakes?

It’s important that you defrost your Welsh cakes slowly, as too much moisture during the defrosting process will cause them to have damp bottoms – something you will undoubtedly hope to avoid!

Simply remove the Welsh cakes from the freezer and place them on a flat surface in the fridge before you hope to enjoy them.

The beauty of wrapping your cakes individually means that you only have to take out the cakes you plan to use at any given time, saving on wastage.

If you take care and defrost your Welsh cakes in the fridge, there’s no reason why you can’t freeze them more than once. However, as we’ve mentioned, you need to be mindful of the moisture content of your Welsh cakes, as you don’t want them to go soggy.

As such, take our advice and wrap them individually before freezing them, so you don’t have to worry about taking out more than you need.

  1. Hi, absolutely love Welsh cakes & just made a huge batch to freeze. When defrosting do you leave them in the cling film to defrost or completely unwrap & leave to defrost on a plate?

  2. It depends! If you can get the cling film off then you can remove it, but it can sometimes get a bit stuck, in which case, you need to leave it to defrost a little.
