How To Freeze Stilton Cheese

Freezing Stilton is super easy. Perfect for when you have leftovers after a special occasion. Before you get to freezing it, however, you’ll want to decide on the portions you want to have in the freezer.

Then you can move onto freezing it:

  1. Portion
Cut your Stilton cheese into portion-sized pieces. How big the portion is completely up to you!
  2. Wrap
Wrap the cheese in cling film. Then add a second layer of cling film. This is to ensure that no air can get to the cheese.
  3. Bag Up
Pop the cheese into a freezer bag. Seal it up, removing as much of the air from the bag as you can.
  4. Label and Freeze.
Label the bag with the contents and date. Pop the bag into the freezer. It really is as easy as this.

3 Tips for Freezing Stilton Cheese

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing stilton cheese to have the best results:

Use in Cooking Only
The best way to use frozen stilton is in cooking whether that’s stuffed inside peppers, made into a soup or used to create a blue cheese sauce.

Expect Textural Changes
Cheese will change texture in the freezer and this is especially true with stilton. It will lose some of its creaminess and it will become far more crumbly.

Keep It Airtight
This is especially important for a stinky cheese like stilton. Not only will you protect the cheese but you will also prevent the strong stilton odour from spreading throughout your freezer.

How Long Can You Freeze Stilton Cheese?

Stilton cheese can be kept safely in the freezer for up to three months from the freezing date. After this, you might find the texture and taste changes too much to be enjoyable.

Before using any frozen cheese just have a quick look and make sure it looks and smells good. If there is a distinct colour change or signs of spoiling then it’s best to throw the cheese away.

How Do You Defrost Stilton Cheese?

Defrosting Stilton cheese is super easy to do but it is something you need to be patient with. For best results, you need to allow your Stilton cheese to thaw out slowly and you can’t speed the process up.

So pop it into a bowl and put it in the fridge and allow it to defrost overnight or for several hours.

The reason you need to defrost it slowly is to combat some of the texture changes. If you try and speed up the thawing process then your cheeses texture can become even grainier and might even become unpleasant,

You should never refreeze Stilton cheese. Just freezing it once will change the cheese considerably and the more you do this, the more it will change.

Does Stilton Cheese Freeze Well?

This isn’t an easy question to answer as like any cheese Stilton doesn’t freeze well if you are hoping it will remain the same as it was when it was fresh. The texture changes and it becomes crumblier.

However, if you freeze it carefully then the taste shouldn’t change noticeably and if you don’t mind the change in texture then you will be able to enjoy it just as much as you did when it was fresh.

You certainly can! Generally speaking, you just need to make sure you store it in an airtight bag. But if you want a little more information on freezing it then check out our dedicated article on freezing broccoli and stilton soup.

Can You Freeze Other Cheeses?

This is a very open-ended question that is impossible to answer, unfortunately. Some cheese will freeze well whilst other cheese will freeze awfully. Fatty cheese such as mozzarella or hard cheese such as cheddar will freeze well.

However, cheese that is soft such as camembert or brie will not freeze well at all
