How to Freeze Passionfruit

Passionfruit is a wonderful addition to juices, smoothies, and many delicious desserts. So, if you want to ensure you have a supply of passionfruit on hand all year round, you can freeze this tropical fruit by following the steps listed below.

  1. Freeze Whole
If you want to freeze passionfruit whole, all you need to do is place them in a freezer-safe bag, seal them, and place them in the freezer. It’s really that simple! However, you can also freeze passionfruit by scooping out the pulp, as explained below.
  2. Slice and Remove the Pulp
With a sharp knife, slice the passionfruit to reveal the pulp inside. Then, using a spoon, remove the pulp and place it in a bowl or jug. Remove the pulp from as many fruits as you want to freeze.
  3. Pour the Pulp Into an Ice Cube Tray
Once you’ve successfully removed the pulp from your passionfruit, add it to an ice cube tray, evenly distributing juice and pulp in each section.
  4. Freeze
Place the tray in the freezer and wait until the cubes have frozen solid.
  5. Place the Cubes in a Bag
Remove the ice cube tray from the freezer and empty the cubes into a freezer-safe bag before sealing it.
  6. Label and Freeze
Write the date that you purchased the passionfruit, as well as the use-by date on the front of the bag, and place it in the freezer. Remember, you can freeze passionfruit for around three months.

You can also use this method to then mix a range of tropical fruits together in one bag which can then be frozen together. Consider freezing with fruits including pineapple and lychees.

Refrigerate for 1 Month

Freeze Passionfruit Juice

Supposing you have frozen passionfruit whole, remove it from the freezer and allow it time to thaw in the fridge. If you’ve frozen the pulp as ice cubes, you can use them straight from frozen by adding them to a range of smoothies and juices.

However, if you need to defrost the cubes, lift them out of the freezer and place them in the fridge, just like defrosting passionfruit whole.

Can You Refreeze Passionfruit?

There’s no reason why you can’t freeze passionfruit more than once. Providing it hasn’t gone bad and has been thawed in the fridge, you can refreeze passionfruit if you have some leftover from a juice, smoothie, or dessert recipe.
