Although an omelette is a super simple snack in itself, and really quick to make, some people like to prepare them in advance and pop them in the freezer, so they can be removed and defrosted whenever they want to eat them.

But how do you do it? Do they freeze well? And should it be avoided?

The Quick Answer

Yes, you can freeze omelettes. Omelettes can be frozen for around 3 months. You can freeze raw eggs for up to one year, but generally speaking, they don’t turn out as well as omelettes you’ve already made.

How to Freeze Omelettes

Freezing eggs is perfectly safe, and omelettes are one of the best ways of keeping them in the freezer. The following steps tell you everything you need to know about freezing omelettes.

  1. Allow to Cool
When you’ve cooked your omelette, you need to leave it to cool before placing it in the freezer. Because eggs cook at a lower temperature than many other foods, your omelette should cool down within a matter of minutes.
  2. Wrap in Cling Film
Wrap your omelette in at least two layers of cling film when it has cooled to room temperature. Double wrapping it protects it from freezer burn and will ensure it is well preserved in the freezer.
  3. Place the Wrapped Omelette into a Freezer Bag
When you’re happy that your omelette is sufficiently wrapped to protect it from freezer burn, place it inside a freezer-safe bag. Push as much air as you can out of the bag and then seal it.
  4. Label and Freeze
You’re now ready to freeze your omelette. Write the date that you prepared it on the front of the bag, as well as the use-by date. Remember, omelettes can stay in the freezer for up to three months.

How to Freeze Omelette with Ingredients

We would recommend that you don’t include ingredients like cheese, meat, and tomatoes (and whatever else you might include in your omelette) before freezing.

While these ingredients are perfectly fine to freeze individually, the omelette will preserve better without them. You can always add your chosen ingredients when you have thawed your omelette and are ready to enjoy it.

3 Tips for Freezing Omelettes

Now you know how to freeze them, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing omelettes to have the best results:

  • Use Rigid Containers – If you have sufficient space in your freezer, store your omelette in a rigid container instead of a freezer-safe bag. This is because they can restrict the movement of moisture better than bags, in turn protecting your omelette.
  • Prepare Fillings Too – When it comes to ingredients to freeze alongside your omelette, you will find that cheeses with a high-fat content freeze extremely well. To save yourself some time when it comes to thawing, you could prepare and wrap your cheese in the same box as the omelette and add it when you reheat it.
  • Try Freezing Omelette Mix – It’s possible to freeze your omelette before cooking it, and it will last longer in the freezer (up to one year). That being said, raw eggs don’t freeze as well as cooked eggs, and it’s not as easy to wrap them up and put them in the freezer.

How Long Can You Freeze Omelettes?

You can freeze an omelette for around three months.

Some people are happy to keep an omelette in the freezer for longer than this, but given the fact that they are thin, we wouldn’t recommend freezing for any longer than three months.

How Do You Defrost Omelettes?

The best way to defrost omelettes is to place them on the countertop and allow it to thaw at room temperature.

It won’t take long for your omelette to reach room temperature at this rate, but you need to ensure you eat or heat it immediately after it has thawed, to ensure harmful bacteria can’t grow on its surface.

If you want to enjoy your omelette hot, you can heat it at a low temperature in the microwave. Alternatively, you can splash a little bit of oil in a pan and heat it over a low flame on the stove.

Just remember that your omelette is already cooked and you don’t want to leave it on for too long as it will go rubbery.

Can You Refreeze Omelettes?

No, you should only freeze omelettes once. If you thaw and refreeze your omelette, it will ruin the structure of the eggs as well as the flavour. It’s much better to create and freeze them as required.

Do Omelettes Freeze Well?

Omelettes freeze extremely well and it’s actually one of the best ways of preserving your eggs. As such, if you have chickens at home and don’t want your eggs to go to waste, it’s a good idea to make up some omelettes and add them to the freezer, as this will help preserve them for up to three months.
