3 Tips for Freezing French Toast

Now you know how to freeze it, we’ve got our 3 top tips which we strongly recommend following when freezing French toast to have the best results:

Use Racks
When cooling the slices of cooked French toast, try laying them out on a baker’s cooling rack. Do not stack them whilst warm as they will steam each other and then become soggy. A rack will allow air to circulate, cooling them quicker.

Try Spicing Your Egg Mix
To make your French toast even more moorish, try spicing your egg and milk mixture with some cinnamon or nutmeg. It really enhances the flavour!

Use High-Quality Freezer Bags
The last thing you want is to open your french toast based and find that they have been compromised in flavour or have got freezer burn.

Normal ziplock bags will work, but they will allow more air particles through so consider using silicone freezer bags to ensure zero freezer burn.

How Long Can You Freeze French Toast?

Given that French toast has both egg and milk products, they won’t last in the freezer for long. It’s best to only keep them frozen for between 1-2 months, though the sooner they’re used, the better.

How Do You Defrost French Toast?

Defrosting and reheating French toast is relatively simple and there are three main ways to do this:

Firstly, you can simply pop a slice or two onto a microwave-safe plate and place it into the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Secondly, you can use the toaster as if you were reheating a store-bought French toast. Use the defrost setting and place the slices of frozen French toast into the slots and toast for as long as is recommended by your specific toaster.

Finally, and probably the best method for defrosting and cooking a larger batch of frozen French toast, is to use the oven. Place the slices on a lined baking tray and pop into the oven at 180C for 10 minutes, flipping the slices midway through.

Can You Refreeze French Toast?

No, it’s not advised to refreeze French toast that has already been thawed.

Freezing products can be quite tricky anyway, but refreezing anything with a milk product or eggs in can be particularly difficult and risky, so it is not recommended.

It would also degrade the texture of the french toast, making it soggy and mushy, which nobody wants for their breakfast or sweet treat!

Does French Toast Freeze Well?

Yes, French toast freezes well and does not change in taste or quality when frozen. It also makes for a great last-minute breakfast item if you are running low on time in the mornings as it is such a quick defrosting process.

Simply grab, zap in the microwave and you have a delicious and nutritious breakfast you can spruce up with some additional toppings.
